Welcome to “Waimarie”, one of Napier’s most historically significant family homes. Nestled privately in the highly sought-after dress circle of Bluff Hill with commanding, panoramic views across the Bay over iconic Marine Parade to Cape Kidnappers. “Waimarie,” meaning “lucky, fortunate or peaceful waters” truly reflects the opportunity awaiting the next fortunate owner. Built in the 1890s for esteemed New Zealand educator Henry Hill, this grand home became a social hub for local dignitaries, family and friends. In the 1930s, the home underwent a transformation when renowned architect Louis Hay was commissioned by the next owner, Gerhard Husheer, founder of the National Tobacco Company, to expand and remodel the residence. The Art Deco influence is beautifully woven throughout, with Tiffany and Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired lead lighting, intricate carvings and exquisite appliqués, further enhancing the home’s timeless elegance. Anchoring the heart of the home, the large farmhouse-style kitchen features a large island counter blending historical charm with modern sophistication to meet the needs of today’s lifestyle. The open-plan design allows for effortless flow between the kitchen and family dining, with French doors opening out to a sun-drenched patio and an inground saltwater pool—an entertainer’s dream. Bathed in natural light the family room opens to the west-facing portico, the perfect spot for an afternoon tipple. The formal living room with feature bay window showcases exquisite lead lighting and French doors provide access to the deck and pool. A third reception room, currently utilised as a home office could serve as a formal dining room or guest accommodation. Upstairs, the primary bedroom offers an en-suite, walk-in wardrobe and a private balcony with sea views. Four additional bedrooms, family bathroom and an additional separate WC artfully blend period charm and modern functionality. A large storage room offers a myriad of options. With a generous layout and versatile spaces, this home offers potential for multi-generational living or could continue to operate as a highly rated premium short-term accommodation. The property has been extremely well maintained with upgrades, not limited to, interior and exterior painting, soft furnishings and tree work. The owners have downsized, presenting a rare opportunity for a family to create lasting memories here. Opportunities like this are few and far between.
